Fixing Epic

Gidday all,

Well, we all can agree (I think) that Epic rules are well and truly broken. Not only should the Epic Book all be burnt, but what I've seen or errata and "fix-ups" don't really go far enough in resolving all the issues within Epic.

So, does anyone actually play that high a level? If so, what do you do to fix the rules?

Cheers,
TGHO

I havent played epic, but I know that in comparison to the NwN epic they are much more powerful. Don't let the PC make their own epic prestige class (don't think there are any). Don't let them take epic spells that has a damage of 600d6 damage and a backfire of 240d6 (bad example, but many epic spells are to powerful). Since they could blast a whole country to kingdom come.

As you say, epic levels break the game, so if I were a DM/GM. No epic levels

We never play passed level 20. That's where the rules end in my opinion.
I'm currently running a game from 1 to 20. No more.

My core question is: What does it ad?

The DM have to be extremly good if he/she can manage to make a serious gameplay out of a level 20+ group. IMO the first levels from 1-8 is funniest, since you then have to roleplay more than a level 25.

BTW: the spell is called the vengeful gaze of gods and does 540d6 to all enemies and has a backfire of 240d6.

I think it mostly adds the feeling of "cripes, now I can do X" or something along those lines. Also, the game I am running at the moment is slated to take the PCs to around lvl 23-24 before it finishes. This is quite high for a PnP game - yeah, NWN does Epic a lot better.

Definitely no Epic Prestige Classes - they are so badly broken I don't know how they were included in the game. I would really like to see what the designers actually playtested, if they did at all. Sheesh.

Cheers,
TGHO

One important rule I have in all games: "There is always a bigger fish."
Even at epic levels, there will be people more powerfull then you. It's a good way to keep players from suffering from greatness madness.

Thanks for the link, Mr.Waesel, some good stuff there.

I agree with the general mood of the thread, in that the GM has to be very flexible to handle the Epic rules, and basically a lot of it will be thrown out on the fly. Luckily my PCs are only 13th at the moment, and I'll be able to rewrite the Epic stuff into my House Rules before they get to 21st level.

Cheers all,
TGHO

Also, I apologize for the rude language therein.

Eh, don't worry about it. I'm an Aussie, we're used to it.

you have a lot of time to prepare yourself if your group is lvl 13...
