Diplomacy/bluff checks

Recently my character was talking to an NPC and the NPC was writing something. My character was curious what it was and asked him. He refused to tell me what the item was and, when I threatened to alert a guard (both characters were in prison), rather than roll a bluff or intimidate check, my DM did a diplomacy check for the NPC, succeeded, and told me that he convinced me that I didn't want to know what the thing he was writing was..

I know DMs are considered to do whatever they want, but I suppose I'm seeing if that is what other DMs would do in that situation, because it seemed a little unfair to me that the DM could tell me what my character felt and how he acted in response to it.

Erm, that's actually an illegal move in the game. You can believe whatever the hell you want to believe, the DM cannot make charisma based skill checks against you without you getting one in return, and deciding for yourself the appropriate action.

In terms of players versus NPC's, there will always be a skill versus skill in any and every situation.

On top of my head, I think you, as a PC, can be bluffed or intimidated just fine, allthough you'd get an opposed sense motive check or will save. However, PCs are immune to Diplomacy, as a rule. So Syberis was right, it was totally illegal.
