If you click on "single player" is your character still listed? If so, you should be able to select your character, select the mercenary difficulty, and continue your game.

I've actually had my characters corrupted on numerous occasions because of crashes. If you go into the \My Games\Dungeon Siege 2\Save\SinglePlayer (or MultiPlayer) folder, there are four files - two of which have a .BAK extension. Delete the two that *don't* have the .BAK extension and rename the .BAK files to the same name as the other two files and that should get you back up and running.

Of course, make a backup of your Dungeon Siege 2 folder before attempting this. Hope that helps!
