Pets

What's the good in having them? To me they seem to be a waste of a party slot that could otherwise be filled with a character that can be equipped with a number of powerful items.

Of course, I am new to this so I haven't really gotten any pet to a mature age, things could be different at that stage. This is why I'm asking for enlightenment before I decide to drag what could be just an amusing "accessory" throughout the game.

Not that I've used many pets, but one to note is the Mythrilhorn. Good armor, good attack. Also raises armor of the party. The more interesting part is that it auto-casts enrage, which is, as far as I can tell, identical to the melee power of Provoke.

I only used a Mythrilhorn for a short period, but it seemed to attract pretty much EVERY attacker that thought they wanted to run past my shiny armored sharp weaponed tanks and just rip the life out of my mage/healer party members.

Aside from that, I've only used pack mules, really. I don't think I'll be doing mules again, though. Just summon teleport and go back. Have to do it more often, but at least ya gots a full party.

o...k

because they have more health?

because they do more damage?

because they gain powers no-one else has?

because some of them are cute?

because they always match your level?

because they reach full power much quicker than characters?

because even as babies they rip your foes apart?

aside from that, yeah why get pets?

I just thought of another point:

Isn't the whole point of PC games to be "amusing"?

also, you don't have to share exp with pets, so I think you lvl up faster if you use pets

...because this pet related exp 'rule' is rather RPG-generic and not intuitive - a monster should give the same amount of exp per party member regardless of the amount of pets in your party and regardless depending on what the pet's level is calculated.
...because you really need a lot of pets to note/'enjoy' this lack (moreover - exp won't be shared indeed, but it also won't be multiplied according to the number of party members).
...because the game gives often too much exp anyway - you never will see posts/complaints like 'my level is only 38 but i have killed every monster on the way to Valdis'.

I assume this 'exp pet hint' (or how you ever like to call it) only get popular for those who tried once to get above level 90 in v2.0-2.2 where you don't have monsters above level 85 to get adequate exp form.
But this is quite obsolete in v2.3/addon or since there are mods to provide higher levelled monsters also in the older game versions.

But back to topic:
Pets are just a different kind to play this game. If you like rather simple party members to help you doing your job, then pets are perfect.
If you like versatile party members, like their quests and conversations maybe, if you can’t see any item found unused/unequipped, don’t worry that party members behave in combat as stupid as animals/pets, then you probably should stick with humanoid members.

Pets get in the way, i just wish summoned Familiars were stronger, or at least more useful. Its one thing to whistle and say 'here boy!' and have a baby dragon fairy unicorn whatnot attack someone. Its another to rip a portal out of the ground made from the bones of charred enemies ripped from the piles of ashes they now are, and have a most so evil come out of it that sometimes it wont even come out, it'll just stick out a giant clawed flaming hand and drag the monsters into the portal cuz its too cool to come to our world. Yeah i want a couple of those, in black.
