When the dragon is perched, ignore everything else and crank the ballista to fire at it. Then in between shots, try your best to kill those other creatures. When I played through the battle, everybody got knocked out but my fighter, but he was able to dance through the fight on his own.

I thought this was the best sequence in the game -- much better than the end boss battles.

Have one guy man the ballista. The other 3 can take care of the creatures.

Here is how I beat the dragon, maybe it will help you.

Basically, my "tank" (fighter) did all the legwork. My spellcasters and archers kept dying in seconds, and frankly, were of no help at all. Go ahead and plan on them dying.

What I did was to turn the ballista to face the dragon, and the shot him. This makes him fly up in the air for a while, shooting fireballs at you. What you need to do is run around the tower in circles until he lands, and then turn/fire the ballista again.

After one or two hits with the ballista, they start firing those monsters up at you. The cool thing is, your strategy doesn't change. Run more or less in circles between ballista shots. What happens is that the dragon mostly misses you, and instead the flames hit the monsters. So the dragon does all the real work of killing the monsters. The only time you take any damage is when you need to stop to turn/shoot the ballista, and frankly, a few heal potions should do you just fine.

Just a tip, the dragon will rarely shoot fire in the same place twice, so aim your fighter for where the fire just hit, and the dragon should always miss you.

Anyway, I beat the dragon in about 5 minutes using this technique, and came through without a scratch. Just make sure to load up on some healing potions, and maybe at least one reincarnation scroll before you go off to fight the dragon. Oh, and cast a town portal spell beforehand too, just in case.

Good luck!

Note that this does not work on veteran or higher. There, the level 64 Durvla will eat your fighter, and your best bet is to get in a ballista shot every 2 or 3 sequences, after killing all the Durvla.

Mr. Weasel, it will work, if your tank is made on shield. Durvla won't damage him (on Elite) if your armor is about 1600 - 1800.

Alas, killing Durvla's isn't so hard. I used Corrosive Eruption power (Combat Magic), killed one, and blow cleaned the rest And I gained a lot of XP, beacuse on Elite Durvlas were 8 or 10 level higher than me.

On veteran, with 800 armor and 2000 health I died in seconds.

That's cool, though. It made the fight actually challenging

I still die

My level is 35 I think I should go back and kill stuff till I get to 39. My armor is set stuff mixed with enchanted stuff. But when it comes to that I go with +to find magic items, I just cant resist. I have better luck in Icewind Dale.
