do items raise skills above 20?

My situation is this: I have Searing Flames at 20 thanks to a few items that add extra skill points. But now I can't put any more points into SF to raise it anymore. Yet at the same time there are powers that require more points in it, since item-granted points don't count toward powers.

So my question is this: if I remove the items, then put a point in SF, then put the items back on, will the skill go above 20? Or will the item bonus be wasted?

In DSII original, Max = 20lvl. + item bones = max 20lvl.
In DSII Broken World, Max = 20lvl. + item bones = max 30lvl.

Thanks, so I guess no way to get around this problem, except to remove the items, add the point, put the item back on and waste that bonus (as long as the item is still good in other ways!)

For DS2 with addon, there will be an NPC in Broken World resp. act 4 in order to reset skills.

If you bother about wasted skill points in original DS2 you could try the Hotfix Mod, behind the inn at Eirulan there is a new NPC with a proprietary feature allowing you to reset one single skill down to zero so you can reallocate the skill points once again.
But better make manually a backup copy of your savegame, that feature isn't test very extensively.

well JohnJSal, heres the thing. You need to raise your skills (especialy for CM) only till you fit the requirements for level3 of your powers, later on in the game you gonna get lots of items with +lvls sooo its kinda waste of points to raise ANYTHING to 20 (for example i have my DERU with survival and dodge at lvl 25 and i haven't toutch this skill at all, everything is comming from items) ....as the other guys said, u can always RESET your skill points in the begining of BROKEN WORLD coz anyway however you develop your characters you will accompish ds2 on merc mode, the whole game is too easy even played in a wrong way...
