LoA: Disfunctional displacers

Allright, not sure if anyone still plays this game or reads this forum, but here goes nothing. At least I haven't found any thread that addresses the same problem as I have.

None of the displacers are working for me. I killed the giant in the storage cave in the single-player campaign, and the displacer didn't work. I imported a lvl 64 character from the original into the campaign in multiplayer, got him questing, ran him up to the giant, killed him, again got the questobjective to use the displacer, but it didn't work. I tried activating the displacers in Arhok first (though that as a requirement would be silly, because you don't hear anything about the displacers until you kill the giant), still doesn't work. I tried the XP bonus pack, first displacer I come across and that should work (the one directly after the Hassat npcs, to the island) doesn't work. In all cases the same thing. I can put my people on the displacer, click the button in the center, it depresses, and nothing happens. The manual says that activated displacers should have glowing orbs around them, none of them do.

The problem is not unique, I've read on some other forums that they have the problem too, but there's not a good and simple solution, other than deinstalling the game, deleting every trace of it and the original, including the savegames, and just installing LoA, and hoping it doesn't bug again the second time. As you can understand I would like to know if there's a better solution than throwing away all the progress I've made in the original, or if I'm not understanding these solutions right. Does anyone recognize the problem, and know what to do?
