city guards

Hello everyone,
I'm playing the demo of the game and I have a question.
While in the city of Stonegate I noticed that all of the city guards have really nice weapons and armor, especially the captian.
I wonder if there is a trick to getting them killed and acquiring their gear for my character?
I tried leading a pack of monsters into the city, but they turned around just past the gate, and the guards followed them out and slaughtered them. It was pretty cool.
I tried targeting the ground near them with area effect spells, but they weren't effected.
Not that I'm a guard slayer, but I want a real sword.

If you stop playing the Demo, and play the Full game you can get further and get better weapons than what the guards have. I don't think you can kill the guards.
