What's with the question marks in the 1.4 mod?

I installed the German-to-English 1.4 mod. I started with a fresh install of the original game, did the German 1.4 patch, and then the mod. I'm also starting the game from the beginning.

Everything seems to be working fine except that I'm now picking up items that have a bunch of question marks ("???") instead of the actual attributes of the item. There are also question marks in the name of the item. So, now I don't know the attributes or ratings (ie. Armor) of the item(s) I'm picking up. It doesn't happen with every item, but maybe half of what I'm picking up.

Anyone else experiencing this? Are there any fixes?

You have to use identify now.

How do you use Identify??

Goto a shopkeep and Identify is a choice...
OR
Get the Identify skill and then right click an item in your inventory with ?? on it.
Having to identify objects is also why items laying on the ground
say "?? Weapon ??" or "?? Sheild ??" now.

How do you aquire the skill Identify? I don't see it as an option when I go to apply new skills. I see in the manual it says it is under Magic, but all I have under magic are the four magic class skills. Currently I'm Fighter, working on both the Fighter Guild quest and the Celestial Order to become an Adept. Any certain requirements that I have to do to get this skill, or will I just wallow in despair as I carry around vast quantities of ??? ??? equipment, waiting to get to a shop?
