Moving a character around using multiplayer does break quests in your singleplayer game. Because of this, I ran into the very same problem. The solution I took was to climb the mountian right behind Vartuggs fortress and run along the ridge to Irynthabl. Unfortunately for Vartugg, he wasn't going to get his eye back

I tried loading a previously saved game with an early version of my character to try to work back to the point where he would accept to see me and while it did work it took a good few hours to get there.
If you do succeed in climbing into Irynthabl, not having dealt with the Stones, you might have trouble if you want to leave for some reason. I never found a good place to climb out of Irynthabl so I had a saved game at Arindale and I would use multiplayer (LAN) to load that game so I could visit the various merchants or rest and recharge my spellbooks at the Inn. I would then reload my game at the maze and carry on whackin' harrowbarks, spiders and whatever else.

Since there are no more quests you will have to undertake to finish the game it doesn't harm any thing to switch your character from save to save at this point.
One more tip - If you haven't utilized the editor and are looking for some armour to complete some sets or the wonder weapon you wanted, there is hope
By using a
third slot.
For example; first slot, in front of the maze. Second slot, Arindale or wherever you want and the third slot at the end of the maze. By using multiplayer you can go through as many times as you like, gaining levels and re-opening the chests. Just lather, rinse, repeat. I don't think it's a secret that the best weapons chest in the game lies within the maze and I think it's fun to see what comes out.
