Ok, I read several pages of the forums and didn't see this, so here goes.

I got to the area where the broken column room is, and can't seem to figure it out. I looked at the walkthrough, but I still don't see the way.

I got the jail keys and released the kid. I tried to go back up to where the grate-door was that Fathien held the key for, that gave access to the sets of stairs down to get to the boy. The grate-door says item required when I try to open it from the side nearest the column room. As well as I could tell from the map I needed to go back up to main area of the building to where the lift is to go back down, but this door not opening has me completely stuck.

If no one can help I suppose I'll have to start the game over?

Are you at #5 in Lower Ulm? If so, you'll need to head north and go up the stairs at B. That will take you to the Main Level. Then you'll need to head mostly south to the elevator at C so you can head back down to the lower level, but on the other side of the door.

Sorry for not explaining the location better.

The door that won't open but that opened before that I'm speaking of is listed on your map's 'Ulm main' as number 12.

The key you require is called the "Fathien Tomb key". You can get it from the editor. I revisited Ulm to check out the problem you are having and unless you had opened the gate at #5 previously, the gate at #12 is your only way out. The walkthrough says you can pick the lock to get in, but it doesn't say whether or not you can pick the lock to get out.
