How to continue playing?

I completed the game and now I wont continue playing with my character. How? After completing the game it sends me back in the main menu but there is only option new game and load game.

this may not be the proper way but this is how i do it:

1: click on multiplayer, and the enter the lobby.
2: host a game. click on ready and start with only yourself playing.
3: save this in an empty slot.
4: exit and click on single player mode.
5: continue a new story with and old char =)

note: all relics and stuff are gone.
