how does automap work?

How does the automap work? I have patch 1.3 installed, just started, and when I press 'm', nothing happens. is there something wrong?

Maybe you didn't install the patch correctly? When I installed it, it installed into a sub-folder and I had to manually move the files into the main folder. I'm not sure why it did that.

Make sure that it says "v1.3" in the startup screen and not "v1.1".

I installed 1.3, and it just worked. The unmodified version didn't work. I updated to 1.3, started a new game, and the game started with the map on. Everywhere I move I can se the map update as I get there. You can hit 'M' and turn the map off, but if hitting it doesn't turn it on, then there's something wrong

No, that's not it. I installed it and (after I moved the files to the correct place) it worked even though I was in mid-game.

I would suspect it's a game in progress that's futzing up the automap. For one, automap information is saved in the game.
Try starting a new game, and seeing what happens. Also, try leaving the area you're in, and coming back, or going to a new area, that may trigger the map info, but may also fubar your save.
Let us know, I've seen questions like this before, I doubt you're the only ones with this problem.

Thanks for the info. I'll try installing it again. Do you know where it is supposed to go. When i launched the patch it asked what folder to install it in. I chose the default folder the game installs to -- C:\Program Files\Dreamcatcher\Dungeon Lords. Is it supposed to go in a subfolder?

I installed the patch again and it said it was already instaled. But the DL main menu says v.1.2E. There's a folder that the patch created called "Dungeon Lords Version 1.3 Patch". What the hell...

As soon as I applied the patch and opened a save game the auto map was working in the lower left portion of my screen. I didn't do anything but apply the patch.

OK, I got it. I found out on the DL home page forums thar the aytoinstaller for the parch is broken. It creates a folder called "Dungeon Lords Version 1.3 Patch". take all the files out of that folder, i.e. cut/paste, and put them into the main DL folder, i.e Program Files\Dreamcatcher\Dungeon Lords. Overwrite any files it asks you to. That worked for me. The Main menu now says V.1.3. Yeah. Now it's off to play -- finally.
