HELP! stuck in shawdow land

i am in the guardian section after the chasm jumping section with no way out
the walkthrough says use the shadows to activate the athienas but they are none . when i go where i came from i end up back in same room .

Just "Shadows" ? Don't you suppose the walkthrough said "Shadow Stones" !?

it says an i quote"You’ll find yourself in a room with three Athena guardians (#4). The guardians start out inactive, so attacking them won’t do anything. Your goal here is to go through the shadow gates to the west (#5), east (#6), and north (#7), and pick up shadow stones from the chests in the mazes beyond them. Each time you pick up a shadow stone, you can use it on an Athena guardian in the main room to awaken it and activate another shadow gate. After you’ve awakened all three Athena guardians, the shadow gate to the south (Exit C) will activate, and you’ll be able to enter the next section." ok how do i actvate them to start off with?

When you first enter the room with three athena guards, go through the west portal. On the island are shadow gates, go through east one, then east again, then west and get stone from chest.

now go south, east, east and use stone on south guard and defeat it.

Now from athena room, go out east to another island. now go east, east, east and get stone from chest.

now go north, north, west and use stone on north guard.

from athena room, use north exit to island. now go east, north, west, east and get stone from chest.

go north, south, south, south, south and use stone on remaining guard.

now go out south.

when i go in to the room with the three atheinas none of the portals are active except the one i came through
