has anyone defeated the elemental evil?

Is it necessary to kill it in order to progress? What weapon is the best against him? How much is he worth?

If you have a ward of fire crystal use it. Keep moving behind the artifact so his spells can't hit you. Run up take a couple of swings and move back again. I found him time consuming but I didn't die once. I used a standard blade weapon.

The elemental really isn't that bad. As mentioned before, have some fire wards and you should be good to go. I was duel weilding, so it was a breeze to destroy.

IMO, the weapon that is dropped ( sword of stone), isn't a bad one to keep a hold of. There are some creatures you will fight later that makes the weapon really useful, since it does extra damage to them.

piece of cake

He was really easy for me by that point with each the characters that I played. I just charged straight at him with my melee fighters and creamed him with magic missiles and blast novas when I played mage characters.
