Changing the avatar appearance

Hi,
I'm new at this so I need a little help (ok, maybe a lot later on), when I created my character I had chosen mage but I was not allowed to change his appearance the only thing available was the default so now my mage looks like a fighter?? I hope I don't have to star over again.

Versions before 1.4 had vertually no options for character appearance. 1.4 and CE/1.5 had extra options available but the four non-human races is still very limited in appearance changes.
