3rd day player - dumb female questions

I have never played this game before (I bought the Collectors Edition Friday) and am having difficulty with the slum district - why are there so many thugs? I can't walk one step without someone sticking me in the back or front or side. What am I doing wrong that I am being bombarded so?

Also what is that twirly yellow thing that is above my head at times.

Need all advice about game playing - I am forever reloading my game because I die all the time. Is there a pause button?

Accomplished so far - Saved the Seer, rescued some relic, bailed out some guy (obviously if I am in the slums) - killed some large trolls, rented a room, saved a guy and gal from thugs, delivered a letter to the father of the missing girl, entered a house and got attacked.

Thanks to those whose footsteps I follow as I read other forum posts.

The twirly yellow thing in the air is probably the vampire witch. If you kill her and give her heart to the guy, by the firplace, in the Inn, he gives you some gold.

All the bandits, in the slums, were meant to ambush you, if you talked to the wandering woman in the garrison district.

When you die, you can hit R and revive, but doing that takes a lot of your advance points.

Why not check out the walkthrough here at the gamebanshee site? Good luck!
