Like the topic says. It just says "item received" right now unless its money.
Should I just run around and steal from everyone and then occasionally look at my inventory and check through it?

Yeah, it's frustrating just getting an "Item Received" message and then being forced to look through 100+ stacks in an attempt to find what's new. The only way to know which item you picked up is to look for the one that's outlined in yellow (designating it as being new to your inventory). If you haven't done that in awhile, though, there are probably several yellow items... making it nearly impossible to determine where each came from.
Because I'm religiously keying in locations for the codex and equipment databases, I find myself jumping into both areas constantly to make sure everything is marked as "seen".

Yeah, I miss the text window from NWN that showed that sort of thing. I like to have a record of when I receive items, what my rolls are, and so forth.
In a related question, is stealing worthwhile? So far early in the game all I get is 4 coppers or metal shards or something similar. Not exactly heady stuff.

I haven't pickpocketed yet extensively, but all I've been receiving is some coin and various ingredients for potions/traps/poisons.

I can say as a mage that money has been pretty tight thusfar. I see some great artifact items for 123g that I've got maybe 4g now on average. First starting though, those copper and a few silver will add up..lol.
Wonder if that somehow helps your skill for later in opening chests and whatnot (i.e. do you gain XP for pickpocketing?)

Since someone mentioned looking through your inventory I thought I'd ask..
Is buying a backpack required? The description says that you can carry 10% more (something like that) but then I never actually see the backpack in my inventory to open. And I have yet to see a rating anywhere on max weight and weight available (like 92/105) and I've never gotten an error saying "You cannot carry more" or anything like that.

I'm completely loaded down with ingredients, weapon runes, potions, salves, and crystals for Shale (and I haven't even picked him up yet). I find myself leaving mundane items or destroying lesser magical ones in order to pick up the better items during long quests.
I've bought 4 or 5 backpacks so far, and could easily use a couple more. They're the first thing I buy if a merchant has one.

I think it was just under the list of your inventory item, right from the character "paper doll".

Just select newest after pickpocketing and the items should be atop with the gold 'new' glow around them.

it works for the the 'quest updated' and 'new codex', but haven't had luck with 'item acquired'. if you hit the inventory menu button on the 360 before the message disappears, it will usually shoot straight to the update or entry.
for my game, i have been have lots of hell with the quest log system. when i click 'make current quest', nothing ever happens. well, not nothing. it mostly doesn't seem to work.
about the backpacks: with the warden's tower (DLC), you get a unlimited storage container. this has helped me immensely. i just dump everything in there and whenever i get full - go back and dump more. there are 2 vendors there for selling all the junk. you have to run the whole quest before this unlocks though. my problem is that i never understood the gifts thing until i had sold a crap load of them. now, i am running around trying to find the losers i had sold the stuff to. the vendors seem to hold the items you have sold them. i'm not sure if everyone does, but a few seem to.

Well...the inventory system in that game kinda sucks, what is sort of helpful is that all the newly received items are highlighted the moment you're opening up your inventory right after you got them...but I guess that you knew that already! | | |

In my experience so far, pickpocketing is moderately useful. You won't get a fortune from someone's purse, you won't aquire any special items, nor will you be able to steal important stuff (like keys or quest items). Most NPCs tend to carry healing provisions like elfroot (used in concoting healing potions), injury kits, or much needed healing potions. So, unless you want to spend your money buying those, steal away...
Now regarding the inventory, it kinda sucks. There is no weight restriction a la D&D (you can carry 99 heavy plate armor suits if you want - although I would recommend selling them) but each different item takes up one slot and this can be frustrating due to their being VERY limited. That means that all the heavy plates would only occupy one slot, but so does each kind of your salves, potions (and they come in different sizes) and your gear (come in different material). Bottomline: buy backpacks. Early on. Extremely helpful during long dungeon runs.

I wouldnt complain if Bioware would fix this issue though.
