| They're used to enchant items. They range in quality--I seem to recall that the best might be gold ones. I'd suggest holding onto the better classes.
The more of the Enchant skill that you have, the more enchanting you can you do to items that will hold enhancements. You won't be able to enchant anything until you start improving the skill, however.
