black lake dungeon observation (poss. spoilers)

So I've been playing DD for the first time and am now in the black lake dungeon fighting the black ring. I've thusfar killed 3 members and have noticed the following: gargoyles (of any kind) rarely attack or gang up on me. I can fight them one by one and stand right next to them and they don't do anything. I was just curious, but is it me? Do I have a stat/item causing this? Is it a bug in the game? It kinda kills the challenge. I'm doing pretty good as a battlemage thanks to the tip from this site. Thanks and keep up the good work.
