Yes, that's correct. (Or Baal if you play LoD, of course).

Oddly enough I haven't started LoD yet. I'm on my second trip thru the original campaign. Thanks for confirming.

Well that's why the cow level sucked then. LoD is just ungodly better with the cow level. Drops are better, and since there's two new types of gems (one with like 50 or 60 subtypes [runes] and another that can have virtually any magical property in the game [jewels]) there's just no comparison.

Cow level in normal diablo 2 is an easter egg. In Diablo 2 Lord of the Destruction, it's a weekend safari zone, you sometimes go their for the gems just because you say "hmm, sure what the hell why not. I can always use a few more runes, see if I can complete this runeword."

Go on normal, and go to Tristram from the stony field (the portal is permanent), just grab the leg again.

Just so I understand. If I want to be able to go back to the cow world I just don't kill the king cow and I can go back as often as I want? Will Wirts leg continue to reappear in Tristam? Does LoD use the same map? Do I get there the same way in LoD?

Yes, yes, yes and yes. You will always find the leg in Tristram regardless of whether you killed the cow king or not, but only if you didn't kill the cow king, you can reopen the red portal from Rouge camp.
Everything is the same in LoD.

So I can't get back to the cow world if I kill the cow-king until I complete the next level? If I kill the cow-king in all three levels can I never return? If not through the red portal then how?

Only way to the cow level is through the red portal.

So if you play online, it might be a good idea to let someone else create the portal as people often kill the king anyway. Of course once you start LoD, there is a better place for experience and item gain.

This link should cover all the major details to the Cow Level if we haven't explained it clearly enough already.
