Will dropped items (gold etc.) stay put?

(Re: Diablo 1) Having my backpack half full of gold is not helpful. Is there a place I can stow my loot? Can I just drop it on the ground in town and expect it to be there when I come back? Or is it possible to leave it somewhere handy in the dungeon to come back for later? Or...will it all despawn after a certain amount of time/as soon as I zone out?

If you're playing Diablo 1 in single player then you can just chuck anything on the ground and it'll be there when you save.

If it's multiplayer then it'll stay there until you leave the game, so remember to pick it up before closing the map. Additional note about multiplayer is if you chuck stuff on the ground it is possible for other players to pick it up.
