Hello Jotun! The Werebear or Werewolf druid is a strong and viable class, and you can play it with or without summoning. I haven't played a druid to very high level, but I found it more fun to play with summoning since it's too similar to just any combat character if you play the druid without. You can also play an Elemental druid, that is IMO more fun more difficult and awfully slow, especielly in early gameplay.
A minionless druid must focus all his skills on the shape shifting tree, and eventuelly max out lycantropy and maul. Some points in Shockwave is crucial, and he will benefit from using a vine too, maybe Oak sage. Werewolf or werebear doesn't matter, they are both very strong.
A shapeshiftning druid with minions, needs to focus either on the Grizzly bear or the Wolves, most people max out one and put only 1-5 points in the other.
Whereas the pure Elemental druid it slow and difficult to play, the combined Summoner/Elemental druid is a much more viable class, so that's another option if you haven't already tried it.
Good luck with your druid!
