Equipping Mercs?

Idiot newbie here... I came on here for help defeating Duriel, and everyone keeps talking about equipping mercs. So let me get this straight... the crappy fighters that you hire... you can give them swords and armor and stuff?? If so, how??

To equip the merc. all you need to do is open their inventory (default key is 'o') Then open your inventory and transfer the items you want them to use. But they have dex, str, and level restrictions so keep that in mind.

Also each mercenary can only use certain weapons. Act one can only use bows, act 2 can only use spears/polearms, act 3 1 handed swords and shield, and if you have the expansion, Act 5 can use swords.

He he... Explains why I go through them so quickly... I used up almost all of them already, in Acts I and II. I thought they seemed really whimpy... *Grins sheepishly*

remember that you can only equip merc's in LOD expansion. in the original D2, merc's suck, since you cant give them anything

Aye... Well, that would be my problem.

It's a good game, so I plan to buy the expansion sooner or later. If I were to buy it now, could I still equip them even though I'm on Act II? And I hear they have bigger inventories with LoD. Does that work on Act II?

when you install LOD, you update the whole game to the expansion. then you can chose if you want to convert your old characters to LOD (indevidually)

but i certainly reccomen you to buy the expansion, and install it, and convert your char to it. in my opinion, D2 isnt that fun without LOD installed

With the right equipment, all you need to do is feed the merc a couple of pots and he'll run right through Duriel.

With the right equip (which I had) my merc could solo any barb (anyone but a sorc or amazon) with my pallies concentration aura on. (patch 1.10 is where my pally WAS)
