diablo friends

Hey.
Ok, so I was playing with this guy and we were having an especially good play, right. So about after two hours he asks me if we could be friends (An akward question at best), and after a couple seconds green writing appears on the screen. I ask him what it means anh tells me to print:
/f a (his account name) (without the perenthesis) and when i do, on the screen appears somthing like: "you have listed (his player name) on your friend list"
what does that mean?

When you add someone to your friends list (and they add you) you will see a message if they come on BNet or join a game. You can also message to all of your friends at once.
