how to rp the losing of levels/power?

Take a spellcaster of some kind as an example. Let us say he is level 16 but his/her level is lowered to 7 because of dying and being resurrected together with some other reasons.

What is it that exactly happens in character? Does he simply forget how to cast the higher leveled spells? Is his god/godess disapointed with him and punishes him? Or is this completely up to each and every player to decide?

My question is simply, are there some kind of official explination to a level loss?

I should add that I play on a neverwinter night RP server.

Losing levels just basically means you have become weaker in all senses of the word.

If you are a mage, your weakness is reflected in the lack of skill or concentration (perhaps memory) to cast those higher level spells.

If you are a priest, it could mean a lack of focus or faith needed to cast those mighty divine magics. I wouldn't say the god is disappointed with him because that would be the result of something else, not level draining.

thats one interpretation. The great thing about D&D is that you can imagine whatever you want about any situation.
So the above could be true, or it could be because the gods took a toll when they resurrected you as everything comes with a price, etc.

I agree that could certainly be an interpretation in the case of resurrections. But I think in most cases of where you lose levels (such as level draining) it is not a result of incurring a God's wrath, but just a case of becoming weaker.
