First time blogging, but here goes:

Now, as we have always noticed from time to time, when somebody from a group committed a criminal act, that group tends to get the blame instead of the individual. We have seen this happen to the Muslims during events like 9/11, the Madrid bombings and the 7th July bombings, the Catholic priests during the sex abuse scandals and gamers during events like Columbine and VT to name a few.

Now, I ask you this: Is it fair to condemn the whole group just because of the actions of a few? To be honest, I am very sick of this attitude. Why is it that nobody have any decent common sense to differentiate between the culprits and the innocents? Is it easier to pin the blame on the whole group than the culprits?

The Pope Speaks

Cross posting this with my own personal blog cause that one is usually much more technical:

In the light of the number of scandals which have been seen in various public media involving catholic clergy over the years, I fell over the reporting of the Popes speech.
It can be seen here at the http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/17/us/nationalspecial2/17popetext.html

Being atheist I’m sure there would be many passages in the speech which I would disagree with (strongly), however one snippet which I felt was ….. especially worrying, was the following:

What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today? We need to reassess urgently the values underpinning society, so that a sound moral formation can be offered to young people and adults alike.

I do not care how much pornography and violence you watch in your everyday life, but whenever you see a child only one thing should be going through your mind … it is a child and “you” are an adult.
Trying to blame “society” for people’s abuse of children is such a cup out that I can’t believe that any sentient person could even said that without some sort of hidden agenda, which obviously for this guy looks to be trying to take some heat of the catholic church in lieu of these child-abuse scandals which have been revealed.

On top of this, what the does it matter that if somebody else is watching all that porn and violence, it have still been clergy which have abused children as well. Do they also watch all that porn and violence which warp them? Leaders of faith indeed.

I am personally atheist but I do respect people’s entitlement to their faith as long as they leave me and mine alone, but this …. I can’t believe the head of one of the largest faiths publicly tries to place responsibility for people’s abuse of children on something as society. No matter what – it is a child.

Now sure, I do very well know the fact that (hopefully) only a small amount of clergy abuses children, and other people also abuse children – but in my view the instant we start to shift responsibilities away from the individual doing the violations onto something as vague and intangible as “society” it is a worrying step away from accountability.

Have we been Mass Effected?

(This is my first attempt at blogging, so don't take it too seriously and freak out. And please forgive any spelling and sentence building misstakes I've done. Comments and constructive criticism are welcome.)

I like Mass Effect. I like it a lot. I would place it in my top 10 best games of all times, maybe even the top 5. No doubt, its a great game. But still, I have a few issues that makes me wonder, is it all its cracked up to be?

While under production, we we're told it would be a sci-fi epic, and it is. We we're told it would rival hollywood blockbusters, and it does. But Is that something to aim for? Games are a relatively new media, that just recently has gained the attention of a mass audience. Gone are the days when you thought yourself lucky when one other kid in the class had a Nintendo, and you had someone to share your hobby with. Today, gamers are legion, and game sales are on par with cinema releases. An example: Spiderman 3 grossed $29.2 million on its first day of release, while Halo 3 grossed $170 million in the U.S. alone on its first 24 hours. So, to sum up, games are big, here to stay, and have a huge expectation on them.

Here we come back to Mass Effect. After such great games as Baldur's Gate series, Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, I was among those that eagerly awaited the next bit of rpg goodness from Bioware. every article, every screenshot and every preview got a "ooh, awesome" reply from me. There might have been some drooling too.

Then the big day came. Having pre-ordered the game, it waited in my mailbox when I came home from work. I inserted it, and played, and I was in gaming heaven. But then it dawned on me. This really wasn't the rpg-and-squad-based-combat revolution I had hoped it would be. The first I noticed was the removal of the squad management interface they had previewed, where you could pause the game and place your teammates where you wanted them. You still have basic commands, such as attack, move, take cover and regroup, and you can use the their different powers, but that felt like a watered down version compared to what I had seen. this might seem like a small issue, but it

The story was, as they promised, epic, and had me, a rpg veteran, actually suprised at a few moments in the game. It manages to give you ups and downs, action and drama, and a little love in a fair pace, and will keep you wanting to continue to the end. But it does feel like a movie, although you have quite a bit control, I did feel pushed down a certain path towards the end. But they have a golden opportunity to use the choices we made, and give us consecuences to deal with in the sequel, and I do hope they do just that.

The classes really didn't bring much new to the table. You have your highly specialised classes, and your hybrids. It gives a fair amount of choices, however, one thing that bugged me was that only one class, the soldier, can learn to use the assault rifle effectively. If you use a talent enough, it will be unlocked, and you can use it in the next playthrough, even if its not part of the class talents. But to get the assault rifle, you would have to play as a soldier, and miss out on all the tech and biotic powers. Once again, a small thing, but annoying none the less.

There are a lot of these little things. Every game has them. But noone seems to notice them in Mass Effect. I have seen nothing but glowing reviews of the game, and it deserves every one, but it has its flaws. Pointing them out doesn't make it any less epic. It only gives the developer some feedback on what to improve next time.

One cannot deny the huge production value in Mass Effect. The graphics look realy nice, although I noticed more than a few framerate drops, the voicework is unlike anything I have ever heard before. Just the fact that the main protaganist actually talk is a step in the right direction, and I hope others follow. But The great things about it aside, I don't think it lived up to the hype. At least, it didn'ät for me. As I said in the beginning, I really like the game, and the grievances I have with it will not stop me from getting Mass Effect 2 on the release day, and playing it with delight.

The Power of... Pink

A friend reminded me recently that I hadn't updated my blog in a while, so I thought it was probably time ;)

A rather trivial topic, to be sure, but hey, it's the beginning of a long weekend, it's morning, and I'm only just getting started on my first cup of coffee.

Well, it's like this, for a long time I have eschewed the colour pink, even though it actually looks quite good on me. In part, there are some shades of pink I really dislike, hot pink and neon pink come to mind, for example. But also, it are the gender associations involved with pink.. baby girls get pink, baby boys get light blue, and on it goes through life, at least traditionally anyway. So, I've generally avoided pink, plus I don't really care for pastels all that much.

Some time ago my SO and I were having a conversation about pink, and he commented that the colour looks nice on me.. I said, "But, but.. it's well.. PINK." He replied.. "Well I wear it." I then said, "Yes, but that's perfectly OK, you're male, so it's fine for you to wear pink." And thus it went..

But then a few days ago, I was strolling around downtown...and something caught my eye..something very spring-like...something actually quite attractive... something... *gasp*... PINK!

There, in a neat little shop that sells an assortment of books, candles, jewelry and a little clothing.. hung a 3/4 sleeve Tshirt.. in a delicate shade of..pink. I paused, and went inside.. because what really grabbed me was the colour..combined with what was written across the chest.. "Stop Bitching, Start a Revolution."
I instantly loved it. the wonderful irony of a statement like that, written in stylized black letters upon a pink background..

Thus, I am now the proud owner of a yes.. PINK article of clothing.. :D
