Gears of War

Posted 05-16-2008 at 11:44 PM by DesR85
I'm giving this game a test run before upgrading my computer. Aside from poor performance from my current rig, I can't shake the feeling that this game is aimed at a non-gamer audience (or more likely, the lowest common denominator). Eg: Press 'Q' to zoom in on a point of interest or on what to do, chainsawing someone with lots of blood spewing about, etc.

I'm not saying that it's a bad game, but I feel as if I'm playing a game for people who have never played a single PC/videogame in their lives.

Sounds like a common issue these days. Challenging players is a no-no in todays mainstream gaming.

Shooters aren't even that complicated in nature to begin with. Why dumb it down further when it is simple to pick up and play in nature? Don't really see a point in that.

Difficulty have - in my personal experience and opinion - moved from being difficult puzzles, paths to find etc, to simply putting 5 monsters instead of 3, or having them do more damage or something.

I remember in the "days of old" how I was stuck in games for days trying to find a path or something. Now there are blinking arrows, teleportation and markers an mass, so the player can blast through without thinking at all.

I agree. Most games nowadays you can easily beat in one sleepless night or just a few days. They spend more time on quality of graphics and effects then they do makeing the game indepth and personal. Games that hook me or make me want more are those that have stories where you have an objective but, feel like you are in charge and have a choice on how to accomplish the objective. Not just follow an arrow while everything you shoot explodes then the mission is over before you even know what you accomplished.
