OK, I just have to get this out of my system!
I checked UPS tracking earlier this morning and found out that my new computer is out for delivery. so it will be here sometime today! I feel like a five-year-old before Christmas, I can't wait!
This old Dell has served me well, but it's a seven-year-old P3... so the time for an upgrade has definitely arrived.
The new beast is:
*Pentium Core 2 Duo, E6850, 3.0 GHz
*500 GB hard drive
*3.5 GB RAM
*Vid card - GEFORCE 8800 GTS
*dances a jig* It will be like going from a ride on an ancient pack mule to a thoroughbred race horse in it prime!

Gee, thanks Xandax!
Actually, I am at present on tenterhooks waiting for the damn UPS truck.... I feel like an expectant father
Yep, I do mean "father," since it speaks to the general feelings of waiting and not having any control over the time of delivery
Of course, we sort of live out in the sticks (well, 30 minutes + drive from the city anyway), so in all probability UPS will be be making their deliveries closer in first.
I really should not complain though. The guy who was in charge of my order at the shop said he figured I'd be looking at either Friday or Monday, so imagine my surprise when I looked at the tracking number this morning and discovered it was "out for delivery" and scheduled to be here sometime today...
Only problem is, it's a beautiful day out and I'd really love to head off for a walk. Instead, I'm stuck here biting my nails *sigh*Posted 11-22-2007 at 02:48 PM by dragon wench

Hmmm...
Yesterday, my computer finally arrived... well sort of. To be more precise, three out of four packages arrived.
Apparently the one package was left behind in a UPS warehouse in the original city. At least, though, the shop I'm dealing with has issued orders to USP to deliver the thing ASAP, so it should appear sometime today. I just hope it gets here earlier instead of later, since I really don't want to have to spend the entire day inside again.. I wanted to take my bike to the repair shop and get it tuned up, since there is a huge network of great bike trails around where I live.
*Glares at Xandax for jinxing the arrival of said rig*

lol Xandax!
I'm sure you do, so tremendous that they extend all the way from Denmark to the Canadian West Coast... You're dangerous!

Seriously, I suspect it will end up being OK.. well hoping anyway. I would have picked the computer up, but the problem is that it would have required a ferry trip, and the entire process would have eaten up a day. Right now... that would be pretty much impossible. Of course, had I been more patient, I could have just waited until Christmas break, and done the pick up then.. but *sigh* after so long without an up-to-date machine I just couldn't stop myself

After some detective work on Google (UPS doesn't make this easy) I finally managed to track down a real, live person as opposed to one of those extremely irritating call trees, and I was assured somebody would contact me with regard to the situation. What I really would like is for the package to be delivered earlier rather than later, just so I can actually get out and attend to some things...of which I informed the person I spoke to. Unfortunately they don't have any control over delivery times, however..
At least, though, she acknowledged that UPS screwed up.
I imagine it will go be fine... but it's not like we are talking about the delivery of a few paperbacks from Amazon here, but rather some fairly high-end speakers, keyboards and mice..
Gah... I really should have listened to that old adage: "patience is a virtue...."Posted 11-23-2007 at 10:23 AM by dragon wench

Some updates.
I'm still waiting for the final box (UPS does not deliver on weekends), apparently this particular driver could not find our address. Admittedly, we are living in a brand new development, but I still rolled my eyes at that. I'll have to get on the phone again tomorrow and see if I can't help them out...
Luckily, however, said box simply contains the peripherals, so I've just hooked the new CPU up to my existing keyboard etc.... and wow... I'm totally blown away. To be honest, I'm in awe. I've went from a P3, 1 G, 384 mb RAM machine...to this... It's like suddenly leaping from the Stone Age into the Space Age.
I bought two games for it, The Witcher and Lord of the Rings Online. Both games are at maximum settings and they run just beautifully! Sometime later I will likely install Morrowind, modded to the skies, just to see the difference. Though I plan to focus my energies on the new games. I feel sort of like a twelve-year-old with ADHD who's been left in a candy store all night, when I have an hour or two to game, I'm not sure which to choose
@Tricky,
I have no idea if this will run BG/BG2, PS/T etc. I'm really hoping it will though. I love those games, and I'd be sorry if I couldn't play them on the new rig (since I don't have the space to set up multiple computers). However, I did get XP Pro rather than Vista, so I'm hoping that will make the new computer more compatible with older games, hopefully the system itself won't be too fast for those old BIS titles...
@Sib,
Well.... I've watched a lot of people acquire new PCs over the last few years, so I figure, it is probably my turn

XP, nice nice. PS/T and BG should run on XP (can't say anything for sure about your graphics card though), but you may or may not run into some problems getting the PS/T installer to work on XP. Do a search in the support forums if you do have trouble with it, I once provided a solution there. Can't remember what it was exactly, but it helped Fable out.Posted 11-25-2007 at 10:56 AM by Tricky
