A little sparkle in the pop..... Or not?

OK, current birthday celebrations have led me to reflect upon sparkling wines... known in various parts of the world as: Cava, Spumante, Sekt, Champagne and so on..
I've generally taken it as normal that one imbibes of these effervescent beverages at times of celebration, and I've even, on extremely rare occasions, come across vintages that have really stood out.
But, it has only recently occurred to me that I just don't like "Champagne" all *that* much. It seems to me that the intensity of the bubbles often drown out the subtle and complex flavours of the grape itself. It's rather like eating an excessively hot curry... the burning sensation of chili pepper overwhelms the more intricate tastes and textures of the meal as a whole.
Indeed, I've decided that confronted with a choice between an excellent Pinot Noir, (red) Zinfandel or Shiraz, and an average (but overpriced) bottle of bubbly... I'd really rather have the wine... Something big and jammy... lots of fruit, but plenty of spice as well..

| | Champagne varies greatly in taste and quality, even when it is actually from the Champagne region. I wouldn't give up on it just like that. That being said, Champagne certainly doesn't hold the bar for sparkling white wines (I'm not too sure about sparkly reds actually, I can't drink reds). I think the best sparkling wine I ever tasted was either German or South African. I'd remember if I drank it more often than once a year. ![]() |
