The Flood Waters Rise, Continued

The Red River is now very close to 41 feet in Fargo/Moorhead, and it's still climbing. These pictures paint a pretty good picture of just how grim the situation is. Since we have two small children, my wife and I evacuated this morning and are now living out of a hotel until it's safe to return to our home.
What a lot of people don't realize is that the flood waters we're battling are much different than, say, those caused by a hurricane. The water here at this time of the year is ice cold and, coupled with the freezing air temperatures, a person's life is immediately in danger if they become even partially submerged. On top of that, sandbags have to be stacked quickly after they leave a heated facility or they become nearly useless for building a dike. It makes for a very difficult and very dangerous flood fight.
The whole thing is really sad. Even if our house survives the flood, the area will never be quite the same. Entire developments and nearby towns have already been wiped out, and the water will no doubt claim more homes and businesses before this is all over. One can only hope that the waters recede quickly and that all the dikes hold as they're supposed to over the next several days.
