Weapon Selection for Duo

I've spent another 30 minutes reading old threads that I dug up with the search feature and haven't quite found what I'm looking for. I apologize if these kinds of threads have been posted to death.

Basically, a friend and I are going to start a duo game of BG2. Since we both have single player games going full of colorful NPCs, we're going to do this multiplayer game with just the two of us. He's going to be a fighter/thief and I'm going to be a fighter/mage (we're still debating on adding the Kensai kit to the multiclass just because I finally figured out how :P).

We're starting in SoA and plan to beat ToB. That said, we're trying to pick our weapons and having a bit of a hard time doing it. I figured I should probably do Katanas for Dak'kon's Zerth Blade and Celestial Fury, but since they are only +2 and +3 respectively as well as not seeing any overly impressive katanas for later use, I don't know if they'll be as effective in ToB.

I have no idea what my friend will want to use for his fighter/theif, but I imagine it should be something he can backstab with. Are backstabs limited to thief weapons or can you use anything you can equip?

Any suggestions on proficiencies for us two?

First of all yes, you do need a thief weapon to backstap. There is 1 more katana you encounter in ToB hindo's doom. It can be upgraded to a +4 weapon.

You probably shouldn't worry to much about profincies. With a Fi multiclass you get an extra point every 3 levels and only get a maximum of 2 in one direction.
My recomendation would be on spears or halberds. There are some nice ones of them. You can stand behind your buddy and use the halberd and cast some spells in between. Further spend some points in a ranged weapon (bow or crossbow).
For your friend, I would go for axes. Combining the throwing axes with a shield makes a realy good tank. You can pick up a returning throwing axe in the temple sewers. It is a tricky fight though. Further let him spend some points in a thief weapon for pre fight backstabbing.

Don't forget to pick pocket Ribald Barterman since you don't have a cleric.

For some reason I never really considered using two handers. My mind was set on dual wielding for both of us. Thanks for prompting me to check out the list of spears/halberds/other two handers on the website. Vorpal effects are nuts.

I think my main problem is not wanting to pass up on nice toys. I imagine I'll just have to deal with going through the game and seeing perfectly good weapons get vendored/bagged because there's only two of us and we can only wield so many at once.

[edit] What are some different types of weapons we'll need? I know +4s or higher for some monsters, blunt weapons for some golems, and it'd be handy to have one of us use the mace of disruption against undead. Am I missing anything?

The fighter/thief should get Ravager for fighters, Carsomyr for mages, and Ram for backstabbing. All +6, all kickass.

Either that or get DoS, Purif, Flesh, Gaxx, Seldarine, ToB and Lum res for 85 MR. Make him a wizard slayer15>thief for 100% MR. : )

Fighter/mage is harder to decide, it's more a matter of taste here. As already been stated, vorpal effects are nuts, which is why I personally would go for Unyielding and Crom or something along the lines. Ravager if the thief doesn't want it.
