Red face

and i had a vision of a thief dualled to a conjurer... now all my dreams have been taken away from me. dualling a mage to something else seems kinda useless.

Only the first class can be specialized.

In BG1 you could. If you have that game I suppose you could duel your character there and then import him/her to SoA.
I'm not 100% sure if this will work, but then again, why shouldn't it?

i think Silvanerian is right.
dual class your character in BG1,
then export him/her to SoA.
if my memory serves me well, i think that
was the first character i played
in SoA, a thief/transmuter.

Gnomes can be Illusionists, Artificers and Flying Doom Slayer Sayer of Death-ha-ha-ha.
Only Illusionists are one of the standard clases though.
