How about the broken weapon you loot off of one of Drueger in Irenicus's dungeon? The description says it's the remnants of an "enchanted weapon"--so can you take it to Cromwell or Cespenar (or that other guy in Amkethran) and get them to make something of it?

Most of the time when I get broken weapons from enemies, I killed them with Fireball or Lightning bolt...

Also the cookbook gives some hints about the layout of Firkraag's dungeon, where the werewolves camp and such...

How about that some items are just there to add color to the game and flesh it out a little. Or maybe some items are there to make you think they have some purpose and put you on a wild goose chase.....being a former DM, I can say that any good DM should throw some items in like that.
They add interest, humor and possibly mystery to the campaign.

There was an eliminated (AFAIK) subquest with Keldorn involving him meeting an ex-paladin in the Sea's Bounty, "ex" because Keldorn had to turn him in as he was hanging out with smugglers and slave-traders. One of the pairs of "Worn-Out Boots" you get from the smugglers in the Bridge District in the Fallen Paladins quest were his, and could be returned to him for experience.
