Post "Use any item" details...

I have searched pretty thoroughly and not yet found an answer...

I hear about these thieves wielding holy avengers and I wonder:
If I am a thief that normally cannot wield two-handed swords at all, and I get "use any item" and wield a two-handed sword, do I get non-proficient minuses to it? Or am I considered proficient? And if not proficient, after getting "use any item", can I then spend proficiency slots to become proficient (or specialized if I am a swashbuckler)?
