upgrading mace of disruption bug?

I brought the illithium ore with mace of disruption +1 to Cromwell, and he didn't mention it when he searched my pack. Is this a bug? Is there something else I need to do?

Are you sure it's the real illithium? the alloy won't work

Thanks, I just figured that out after I posted. I don't know what I was thinking giving the real Illithium to the artist guy. I guess I'll have to rely on a + 1. (or cheat)
