Strange Dual Classing Problem HELP PLEASE

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have recently purchased BG2 and upon reading through your forum and having nearly clocked it with my original party I decided to solo through the game with a Kensai/Mage Dual class combo. Here is my problem:

When i get a level up that would bring my Kensai to level 9 I select the Dual Class option. I read through all the warnings etc etc and select Mage as my new class. Following that I have to select a weapon to be skilled with - I tend to select the quarterstaff but i have tried them all to get it to work. The next step is spell selection-this is where the problem is. When i get to this screen, the column of text on the right hand side advises me that i have 0 spells i can add to my spell book.

Ok that is fine, I have loads of scrolls to give me spells. However the DONE button cannot be selected... likewise I cannot select any spells to add to my spell book. This seems to be a circular problem and I have tried everything to get past it but have run out of ideas. It seems that without adding a spell the done button cannot be selected but I have 0 spells i can add to my spellbook!

PLEASE HELP ME AS THIS IS REALLY ANNOYING

In case someone asks about my base stats they are as follows:

Strength 16
Dex 18
Con 18
Int 18
Wis 7
Char 3

Does anything happen when you click on the spells?

Are you fully patched?

Do you have any mods installed?

Upon dual classing to a mage you should be able to choose two spells. I just tried it, having the same stats as you only level eighteen. Can you dual class with another character of the same time? Like create a game just to see if the error repeats itself.

When i select a spell the spell description pops up in the right hand column but the box itself is not actually highlighted with the normal highlighting colour that appears when you select a box.

No I don't have any mods installed.

No I am not fully patched either. I only intend to play single player campaigns so haven't seen the need to update my version. Do you think patching it could help and if so where is the site that you most often download the patch from?

I am not sure what you mean exactlay about trying it with another character, I would definitely prefer to not have to play through chapter 1 (short though it is) again its just very time consuming. If it comes down to it though i may have to do just that.

I would suggest patching your game even if you are playing only single player. The reason for that is that a patch is basically a compilation of bug and problem fixes, and as no program is perfect from the very start, you should apply it for a better gaming experience.

I usually download patches at fileplanet.com. You will need to make an account which is free.

As for testing it with a new character, what I mean by that is not actually playing through the whole game from the start but rather restarting with a sample character, just for the purpose of seeing whether he/she can successfully dual class. If he/she can, then the problem lies with your current game. If he/she can't, the problem is with the installed game itself. You don't need to save, just check if you CAN choose the two spells.

ALWAYS download and install the official patch always. You always want to do this. Did I mention always?

BioWare: Welcome to BioWare

If you do not have the Throne of Bhall expansion game installed for some reason, then you need to download and install the Shadow of Amn main game patch. Do NOT use the ToB expansion game patch.

If you have the ToB expansion game installed, then you do not need the SoA main game patch, because the expansion game patches the main game. Instead, you should ONLY download and install the ToB expansion game patch.
