Need help rescueing Imoen.

I'm in the Asylum right now, and the guide says that I shouldn't encounter Irenicus on the first level, and that I need the other prisoners' help to fight him. Well, for some reason he shows up, takes me down to the second floor and kills all the prisoners before I get to do anything!
Then he cast some spell so I get a dream fighting Bhaal and things. Should it be like this?!?

You're fine. The guide is ahead of where you're currently at. Play through the dream sequence and what comes after and eventually you'll end up back on the first floor of the asylum.
