Do you get a message come up such as 'version conflict'? You both need to have the same patches installed, otherwise you will not be able to join his game. The fact you have different types of connection should not affect. Also, are you creating the game in Gamespy? or in modem to modem connection

Actually after hours of trying we finally got to play together. the only problem now is each time we enter the smae game together, during about 5 min of play the non host gets dropped. both our internet connections don't disconnect. what is going on here?

2 obvious possibilities are either that he is too laggy for you to stay connected to, or perhaps if you have a firewall/proxy/router it is causing some sort of problem staying connected.

Resolution: Tell your friend to get a better connection, OR you host the game rather than him..

As for the router/proxy/firewall.. If it's a proxy, you need to disable it. If it's a firewall/router (or just a firewall without the router) you can go into your firewall settings (see technical help manual), and assuming you know what port BG2 uses, you can disable the firewall from blocking that port.

Seeing as you have gotten the game to run together it's unlikely that a firewall is an issue.. On the other hand it's very likely that your friends connection is the issue. I would look into that first. If you still can't get connected even after he tries to use you as a host, then I'd start looking for more answers.

well i've been hosting the game and there was one time where we played for about 45 min without him dropping. i always host the game since i have a better connnection. but isn't it better to have my friend host since hosts can't get disconnected from the game he created? we both don't have firewalls. not sure what a proxy is or how to disable it. i need answer please. help.

you can always call bioware or interplay tech support. I've no experience with this setup, I've only done LAN gaming with BG etc...
