Question Mazzy or Keldorn?

I'm going through a second time and i'm don't know who to pick up: Keldorn or Mazzy? I don't care about the holy avenger (amazing weapon but Keldorn is a goody-good). If Mazzy sucks then I will pick up Keldorn. Suggestions?

That totally depends on the rest of your party. I like mazzy personally, but keldorn with carsomyr and gloves of dexterity is good

Keldorn is a goody-good? What do you think Mazzy is?
For my style of play I found Mazzy better. With grandmastery in shortbow and shortsword she is an awesome archer and also has enough power to fight it out hand to hand if neccessary.

Well, both are goody-goodies, but it depends, if you need a good archer take Mazzy(Gesens, Tansherons), for a tank Keldorn(Carsomyr+Gaunts of Dex).

My personal preference would be Mazzy. She is a God with a short bow, and you can throw her up front as needs be, with Jaheira. This leaves Minsc as your tank with all the best magic stuff http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif

Plus if you take Keldorn you can't take the Bohdi path without losing him, and the Bohdi path gives you more XP and better items http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think you'll get more dialogue from Mazzy too.

Then again, I'm not a big Keldorn fan, I think he needs too much time and effort invested in him to be worthwhile, where as someone like Mazzy simply needs a decent bow http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif

Quitch has well-stated the reasons for going with Mazzy. I'll play opposition. http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif

Keldorn, as a true paladin, gets to wield the Holy Avenger. But it's more basic than that. Mazzy is by configuration a melee fighter who specializes (lots) in ranged fire. This is a contradiction in terms: when I want a melee fighter, I want a tank, a person who can stand there and deal out damage before they're reduced to slag. Mazzy from this perspective is more of an archer, and I can't see replacing Keldorn as a tank with Mazzy to fulfill the same purpose.

My thoughts exactly. http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif

It all comes down to each NPC's specific purpose. What's so nice about AD&D is that you don't need to configure every party member to be able to handle every possible situation; in fact, it's literally impossible. Specialization is key, and it's for that reason that a choice between Keldorn and Mazzy depends entirely on what role needs to be filled in the party.

Personally, I didn't pick up Mazzy because my main PC was an archer. I was using Tansheron's bow myself, and Mazzy just doesn't compare to Keldorn as an all-out tank.

As bizarre as this may sound, one of the big reasons that I liked Keldorn so much was because I needed a decent group leader. He's a paladin; he's got a great charisma, all the more so with the Helm of Glory; and his voice is so much more preferable to the lousy job BioWare did with all the default PC voices. He's got a real Sean Connery kind of thing going for him, and I dig that. http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

70% magic resistance helps too.

Mazzy won't stay with you either if you side with Bohdi.

Well, when i look at your team i would Choose keldorn. I always wants at least 3 "tanks" and mazzy works, but is better with a bow.

I played good though and used them both, i would kick out the smelly ranger and pick mazzy, she is better.

They're both very good, but I'd take Keldorn.
See, you don't really have a lot of tanks: Minsc, and maybe Jaheira, but she ain't that good of a fighter.
Also, Keldorn might be the best NPC in the game. Why? Carsomyr, the fact that he can use Dispel Magic and True Sight a lot (2 invaluable spells), and his kit makes him the perfect flayer-slayer.

Best NPC always always depends on your party, and Keldorns stats arent very good at all.
He is the only paladin, but equipment doesnt make anyone good alone, will probably be better equipment for other characters in expansion.

Only thing good about him is his kit and his sword, stats arent that good, kinda suck actually, armour is ok

Several posts mentioned equipping Keldorn with the Gauntlets of Dexterity, which I'd say is a must for him. However, I'd also hike over to the Adverturer's Mart and buy him the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength. His native STR is also kind of puny, not even 18, and the Holy Avenger is much more effective when he's wielding it with a 19 STR.

Gyre, depending upon whom you have in your party, you may want to save the Hill Giant Strength Girdle for another party member and just let your clerics cast Strength on the whole group before battle.

D'oh! http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif

As said, if you want a tank, take Keldorn. However since most situations call for only one person with the right equipment, I think you're much better off focusing on Minsc, using Jaheira as backup, and Mazzy as archer God who can get stuck in as needs be.

maybe Jaheira, but she ain't that good of a fighter

Ummm, Iron Skin? Lower AC than pretty much anyone? She has the potential to be a damn good tank.

Keldorn needs too much equipment for my liking, why give it to him when you can give Mazzy a bow, then give everything to Minsc http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/smile.gif
