Loot from Shadow Thief Guy (Vail or something?!)

I read somewhere that the Shadow Thief Guy who helps you find Imoen has a really good loot. Do I have to pickpocket him for the loot or will I kill him later on in the game? I still have to take the trip to Spellhold. I'm doing all of the other quests of chapter 3 first.

You want to go after Aran Linwail then? Well he does drop some good loot IF you allied yourself with Bodhi. Otherwise the loot doesn't come up quite as nice as expected. And please don't try to pickpocket the king of thieves. He might take offence. ;-)
