Baasically for a paladin you've got two top choices.
Gorgon Plate
elemental resistance and saving throw bonus.
Red dragon plate
50% fire resistance
highly useful for the flame heal trick. Wear it, and a helm that provides fire resistance, helm of defence is great, has 20% resistance for fire, and another saving throw bonus, and wear the ring of fire control or fire resistance.
This will push your fire resistance to around 110%-125%. When you have resistance over 100% in anything, You actually heal when attacked that way. So have your mage cast incindeary cloud or meteor strike on an enemy group, and have your paladin wade in with holy avenger. Your char will look like he's taking damage, however his health bar will go up the longer he stays in the fire damage. And since the monster ai will attack the closest enemy first, you crisp fry a whole bunch of monsters who will stupidly stay in the damage zone to attack you while taking damage from the same flames that are healing your character. This is also useful in facing red dragons, fire elementals and any other monsters that use flame attacks.
I havent figured it out how yet, but his will work for any resistances that you can push above 100%.
A truely cheese tactic is the TOB wizard slayer thief. A wizard slayer gets high resist in magic because of its class. A thief can get the use any item ability. So, I read somewhere that using this dual, when you max out the first profession you can get 50% immunity to magic and by taking up holy avenger you can push near 100%. Several amulets will push magic resistace to over 100%, allowing you to take a disintegrate, lauhgh it off and have it heal you.
If you are impatient, however, or run a magic heavy party, like mine, simply use two protection from magic energy. I havent tried it yet, but I believe I read somewhere they stack, so a character thus protected can wade thru a magic missile volley or a abi dahzim and actually get helaed.
