| | There are only a few locks I've had any trouble forcing with 25 Str and most of those can't be picked either. On the other hand, if you have someone who can pick them, the extra exp you get can add up. |

| | You have to have enough thieving points in Open Locks, or certain locks won't budge. See, each lock is defined by a number, sort of like the lore value of an unidentified object. If that number is higher than your Open Locks skill, you won't be able to open it.

I was really surprised to find out that you should sort of attack it. Of course, you should have sufficient strength to do it successfully.

| | Uhm... maybe you guys don't know this, but forcing a lock is done by the "thieving" button. You can also bash the lock open, by using your weapon.
You probably already knew this, but after reading the previous posts, it makes me wonder somehow... |

| | I'm pretty sure forcing is not done by the "thieving" button since warriors and the like don't even have it. Picking is done with the "thieving" button, you force the lock by attacing it.
I just wonder how it is determined whether you succeed in forcing it or not?

| | Try only once because the results will be the same each time. I remember in BGI that first store in candle keep. I tried like 40 times when I first played thinking it was a roll thing, as it turns out when you try and force it goes off your strength and either you have enough for that lock or not. like pope said |

| | I don't know...in my games I always thought it was based on the rolls...
If it was just a number ...say 40 and I needed Str. of 15 to force it open, and I only had 14 Str. I shouldn't be able to force it open right? So my first try should always force open any chest and any other try shouldn't.....I believe something is not right here because I know I have opened them on the 5th or 6th try.
EDIT..
A fighter doesn't have a "thieving" button. But if you try with a fighter it says...You failed to force the lock...not you failed to bash it.

| | I also don't think it is a matter of strength only, since I know I forced them not on the the first try. I'm not sure if I remember this right but sometimes a weaker NPC could force a lock that my stronger PC couldn't force.
I never played PnP, how is it done there? |

| | Could be your right. Kevin D. would know for sure.
I also tried with a 19 str. in the seven vales chests lots of times and never opened so discussing this friend we thought it was all or nothing like when a thief either has or doesnot have enough open locks ability. |

I never played PnP, how is it done there? | Check out the manual. At the ability scores table, it says "bashing %" at STR. Each chest has his own %.
Now the reason that you can open it after a few tries: it depends on the weapon, somehow. Don't know exactly how, but it just is. Sometimes my sword can't open it, but my fists can, which is weird.
Anyway, with Crom Faeyr, you shouldn't be having too much difficulties with locks http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

| | I always wondered what bashing was good for. Now that I think of it, I should have asked it here. http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/frown.gif
BTW does that mean that a lvl.1 fighter has the same chance to force a lock as a lvl.20 fighter?
