D&D core rules setting

with the core rules difficulty, do things like character position matter? I mean does the game take into account attacks from the rear or sides etc for thaco and damage adjustment in the core rules difficulty setting? Also, do you need to actually be standing behind something to backstab it or is invisibility the only required condition?

i believe that ever since TotSC, it has been necessary to go behind to backstab. other than that, i don't believe that position does effect it. i'm not a PnP gamer, so i'm unsure about if there was anything like it in the rules, but nonetheless it is highly unlikely that the developers would have been bothered to do all the scripting necessary for that kind of thing.
