Question cleric/mages what do you think?

I've been a sucker for magic for a long time. I played through BG1 ,and am begining BG2 with a cleric/mage.I wanted to hear people's opinons about them both good and bad. I also wanted to know the best items to equip with them.

thank you for your time. ^_^

I think a cleric/mage will be very good in ToB, since he can get spell triggers and such with cleric spells as firestorm. In BG2 he's not that powerful since you can only get to level 13/14.

On that same note, Aerie should be much, much more powerful in ToB than in BG2. Well worth adding to a party.

My VERY first game (which I didn't finish, I deleted it) was using a half elven cleric/mage. I hated it so much, that character is astoundingly weak, it's amazing. I mean with a party of Valygar, Korgan, Jaheira, Yoshimo and myself (Minsc got flesh to stoned ) I could not, under any circumstances defeat the tanar'ri in the Abyss (part of the Planar Sphere quest). No matter what I tried, I ALWAYS died. Anyway, I dumped that game and played my first true game (ie my first game I finished) using a monk, which is an awesome class (too bad I had a bug that made him walk normally)

Cleric/mage will hit lv25/20. Cleric will get their max spell slots, mage will get one less spell from lv6 and lv7 (I think so). It's not necessary to get intelligence up to 18 (16 or 17 would be adequate, 'caus there's a potion of genius!), but roll wisdom up to 18 for saving vs. spell.

I do not think multiclass would be that powerful in ToB, since they will lose many high-level abilities and their spells would be also less powerful (esp. offensive spells like abi-dalzim's horrid wilting where you roll 20d8 instead of 30d8 for pure mage and also think about sunray/firestorm/holy smite)
You could dual from mage to cleric at lv12 (750000XP) since cleric will reach lv40 at 7200000XP so that you get lv12/40 mage/cleric.

If you really want to make C/M, here are a few items you really need:
Bladesinger +4/CF/sling+5/Amulet of power/Sentinel +4/Ring of Gaax/boot of haste (it does haste you rather than make you walk faster, as long as you don't use patch from kevin)/gauntlet of dexterity or weapon expertise/ring of wizadry (if you cannot get extra gaxx ring), clock of sewers or clock of reflection, etc... Hope this helps

I like Cleric/Mages. They're great for concentrating the spellpower in the party. One person casts spells, the others stomp bootie (and keep the caster alive).

What could be nifty for TOB is to get two characters, one cleric, one mage. Dual-class both of them at, say 3 mill exp. Then, you'd have two insanely powerful critter-fritters.

cleric mages are pretty neat, lot's of fun spell combo's, lots of spells in general they don't make for great mele char.

but fragile: the high int, wisdom, & cha. prob means a lower str & con.

if spells & fun abilities are whay you're looking for they could be pretty cool.

for one hell of a dual if you could get to level 14 cleric, then switch to mage (need a higher cap to do this) you'll eventually have access to all mage & cleric spells. wow.

At ultra-high level (ToB) lots of enemies are magic resistant or outright immune to spells. Good warriors will always be needed.

Of course, the best warriors are also spellcasters. I'm sure that the Cleric/Mage, with access to just about every prep spell in the book, will fit in just fine. Clerics are OK warriors, although they have only one attack. With Tenser's, Improved Haste and all the priestly THAC0-raising spells, just think about what your Projected Images and Simulacrums alone could do.

What would be good is a priest of helm dualed to mage at level 21, no need to memorize true sights, or priest of talos at the same level(lighting bolts are very good in my opinion and you will have that storm shield wich is pretty useful)

lightning bolts are good?

is it like the mage spell or the druid call lighting.

i've never been good w/ the bolts almost every time i get the dam thing bouncing around and it just won't stop until it kills my main or the rest of the party.

I like Cleric/Mages, they work very well as a second mage or cleric. Especially a gnome, who gets +1 mage spell/level (-1 Wisdom is not a big problem). I think an ideal Cleric/Illusionist should have these stats: x Str, 18 Dex, 16 Con, 19 Int, 17 Wis, x Cha. The best equipment for such a character: Robe of Vecna (can cast both spell types fast), Sling of Everard, Sentinel shield, Ring of Protection+2, etc.

Thumbs up

Cleric/Mages are incredibly useful! Don't forget that they can wear helmets and carry shields and equip them with items which reduce casting times.
