What is the best armor for a straight mage? Seems like all the good ones are excluding mages.

Mages cannot wear armor (unless they are dual or multi class), only robes, the robe of vecna and the robe of good/neutral/evil archmage are the best ones.

Robe of Vecna - Bonus merchant, Adventure mart.
Robe of the Good Archmage - Trademeet, The Smithy.
Robe of the Neutral Archmage - very hard to find, must do the Edwin/Edwina quest to fund one (battle spoilers).
Robe of the Evil Archmage - Ust´Natha, merchant.

In regards to the robe of Neutral Archmage, how do I get it, I don't care about spoilers for this one items, I WANT IT Grrrr (I'm sure you're all terrorfied now). Plus is the Robe of Apprenti worth losing a apprentice over? It's supposed to give a good armour class, though it hasn't got the THACO + 1 and 5% magic resistance a robe of Good Archmage has.

Note: I read this here but I never did it on the game.
The robe of the neutral archmage is found after Edwin becames Edwina (the nether scroll), after some time a mage will come after him, cover for Edwin and that mage will return, restore Edwina to his "proper" gender and Edwin will kill him, the mage have the robe on him..
As for the Robe of the Apprenti, not really you get more XP by keeping all the apprendices alives and you can get the other robes (Vecna and Good archmage) without any problems (only that you need that cash for then).

Not armour but braces of defence AC 3 and a good dex works wonders. The braces can be bought from the adventurers mart
