Why is it crashing

Recently started playing BG again, I am on Coran's quest and have done this before with a different group of characters (no coran last time) and not had a problem. This time as soon as I kill the first wyvern the game crashes! I have done it twenty times. The screen blanks right after I recieve the expierence and I am back to my desktop. Help!

Do you have the older BG set (not original saga), and if so, do you have the patch installed?

I believe I have the original, it is very old (1998 copyright) How do I install the patch? I think I tried to do this before but was unsure if it loaded right. Please type slowly and use small words I am not as computer savy as I would like to be.

You can download the official patch at Game Banshee: http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgate/downloads.php
Then go to Baldurdash to get a lot of other bugs fixed: http://www.baldurdash.org/BG1/bg1fixes.html
As far as I know the official patch and the Baldurdash patches are all selfextracting. Even I could get 'em installed. Just download and follow the instructions. If there's any trouble though, let us know.
