Too many items to carry

Hi:
I want to store some inventory items in a chest so that they will be there later if I need them.
I find lots of chests and drawers but can not manage to get my itmes in there. I end up dropping them on the floor instead.
I open the chest them go into inventory and put the items in my "ground" slots. I guess that is why they end up on the ground<G>
What's the trick?

When you click on a chest, two inventory screens pop up. The left one is the chest the right one is yours, click on an item in yours, and it will go in the chest.

Thank You..I was trying to "drag" the items
