I've got a problem with multi-class

Heya!

I have a problem which I don't know if it's a bug or if it's supposed to be that way.

I "multi-classed" Imoen before going into the mines (thief/mage) and now I can't use the find traps ability which is needed . On the char info it says that the thief class i unactive - how to I fix it? or what's the great deal with having a multi-class otherwise?

Thanks!

A dual classed character's original class stays inactive until he/she has gained one more level in the second class than they have in the first class. So if Imoen was a third level thief when you dual-classed her to mage, she will have to be a 4th level mage before she can use her thieving skills again. Also note, she won't be able to improve her thief skills at all, except by improving her dexterity (slight improvement) or by using items that boost her thieving skills. It's best to wait until at least 6th level before dual-classing her, and to have picked up another thief in the meantime to take over the thieving duties, temporarily at least.
