Daer'Ragh (maybe spoilerish)

Ok, I have one question, who is Daer'Ragh???
I know where he is and that you click the gravestone several times to piss him off, but who is he??? Why is he there? Is there a quest linked to him or what??

According to the Gamebanshee Walkthrough, he just seems to offer an interesting fight, but without really any good loot or experience. He seems to return after every fight, and I guess that's because the game doesn't offer you a sharp pole or a healthy bunch of garlick to kick his ass for real

I just played him myself, which was quite easy, since I am now around level 6/7. But I would definitely not recommend it to a rookie party, since that fire can roast the living daylights out of you if you don't watch out.

I don't know if he also has a specific background story for the whole Forgotten Realms saga, so I guess we need VonDondu to clear that up
But according to me, he's just a bit of fun by the creators. Nothing serious.

This brings up an interesting subject. I just found a recent message thread at the Forgotten Wars Modding Community Forum that talks about powerful Mages who have spells named after them. I'm familiar with the Baldur's Gate series of games, but I'm not familiar with the books on which it is based (unlike many of the people at the Forgotten Wars Modding Community).

According to Nightmare and Echon, Melf, Otiluke, Tenser, Mordenkainen, Khelben, and Abi-Dalzim are mages from the Greyhawk setting. Larloch and Agannazar are Forgotten Realms wizards. Daer'Ragh was invented by Bioware and named after one of their programmers, Mark Darrah. Nahal (who must have been a Wild Mage since several Wild Mage spells are named after him) was also probably an original Bioware creation. When Bioware created their spell lexicon, they used "traditional" names for spells that had already appeared in literature.

I assume that when Bioware invented new spells of their own, they named them after their own original characters. Since the Bioware designers had played pen-and-paper games together for years, I'm sure that many of their original characters have a long, interesting history that we don't know anything about. I can't remember any references to Daer'Ragh or Nahal in any of the books you find in BG1 and BG2. Does anyone else?

Nope. I just looked through all of the ones listed online and neither of these names are mentioned. By the way, VonDondu, where do you get all of this information? Do you just look it up online? If so, where? I would love to know all of this stuff!

I don't have any special "secrets". I've played the game several times, and I remember parts of it very well (but my memory isn't perfect). I also use the following sources:

I found the message thread I linked to above by using a quick Google search, and then I "cribbed" from the message thread (which I read through) by cutting and pasting. I gave credit to Nightmare and Echon, which they fully deserve, but I deduced for myself that spells named after Daer'Ragh and Nahal must be original Bioware spells.

I read a couple of interviews with the Bioware designers a few years ago in which they described their pen-and-paper experiences. I found a couple of links here and here.

For most of my "research" (especially when it comes to dialogues and global variables), I use Infinity Explorer. Some people prefer Near Infinity, but I'm not as familiar with it as I am with Infinity Explorer. To look up item descriptions, item codes, creature codes, and so forth, I use Shadowkeeper, which I then cross-reference with Infinity Explorer.

Well, it's very effective. Maybe I'll have to try it.
